Another week, another crop progress report, another “very poor” showing for the Midwest.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest summary on crop conditions (for the week of July 29) is more of the same. The drought is casting a wide net of hurt. News coverage has focused on corn (in which 66 percent of the Kansas crop is now rated “very poor” or “poor”), but soybeans aren’t faring much better.
The chart here shows the breakdown for pasture and range conditions across the four-state region. There’s no need to include the “excellent” rating because there is no such thing in this area – even for the 48 states assessed, only 2 percent of the land was rated excellent.
