The Local Food Challenge
Growing Food, Growing Market
The market for local food is skyrocketing.
Originally just a tiny niche for foodies and small farmers, local farm sales total more than $5 billion a year. And the growth is continuing to accelerate.
While farmers’ markets and farm stands are still a core part of the local food scene, some farmers are thinking bigger in order to create viable, sustainable businesses. Advocates have spent years cobbling together support for systems that integrate local food into every day life. And now, you can likely find food grown locally in your grocery store, in your kids’ schools and in nearby hospitals.
Now, farmers that want to grow food and consumers looking to put local food on their tables say they have to broaden and strengthen burgeoning local food systems if the local food market is here to stay.
